Y hace unos años pasó a llamarse Cottagecore.
The Secret Garden (1993) ¡Sorpresa!
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) Basada en la novela de Rosalie K.Fry titulada Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry.
Frog Concert - Slumbering Sounds of the Frog Fellowship (2023)
I recently recalled the story of The Cottingley Fairies, where two English girls claimed to have befriended the fairies in the stream. As proof, in 1917, they took pictures with them. Thanks to the photographs they gained a lot of fame and even Conan Doyle, who was into all this magical-occultist stuff, went to investigate the matter.
Even if the photographs were fake, there is something wonderful about creating a world invented by girls, as for example the Brontë sisters did with the Glass Town and Gondal. I suppose it helped to develop the imagination to be bored and to live away from everything, in the wastelands.
When I was a child I loved this kind of stories, maybe because I idealized what it must be like to have sisters.
During the 90's there were many movies of this style. Of course, in 1997 there was one inspired by Elsie Wright, Frances Griffiths and their fairies, entitled FairyTale: A True Story. It must be remembered by few people because when I posted an illustration inspired by it, on Instagram Stories, no one guessed what movie it was.
Stories like this were a major influence on girl's aesthetic. They were fascinated by Beatrix Potter, the life of Tasha Tudor, collecting leaves in the woods and reading poetry by John Keats. In my time Mori girls became fashionable, it was a term that came from Japan, which romanticized nature. And a few years ago it was renamed Cottagecore.
Other movies that we girls of my era loved were:
A little Princess (1995) It is based on the book with the same title by Frances Hodgson Burnett. It is about a very imaginative girl who lives, with all kinds of luxuries, in a boarding school for girls in New York, until it is announced that her father has died in the war and the school, not receiving a penny, moves her to the attic to work as a maid.
The Secret Garden (1993) Surprise! This one is also inspired by another Frances Hodgson Burnett book. I lost count of how many times I saw this movie in my childhood, as I imagine my friend Eva did too.
We meet again, with another parentless girl raised in India. But in this case she is sent to live in England with her sullen uncle and a hikikomori son who is always sick. There she will discover an abandoned garden that will become her refuge.
The Secret of Roan Inish (1994) Based on the novel by Rosalie K.Fry entitled Secret of the Ron Mor Skerry. The story is seen from the eyes of a girl who is sent to live in an Irish fishing village. There, reality mixes with Irish folklore and magical creatures such as selkies.
Celia (1993) I could not help but recommend this series based on the books by Elena Fortún. You can tell they spent a lot of money because it is very well set. Although Celia looks like any little English girl, her cheeky character and sense of humor give her away as a Spanish kid.
Recommendations
Alina She's a girl who looks like she's right out of one of her creations. She makes dolls, Christmas tree decorations and all kinds of pretty things.
Frog Concert - Slumbering Sounds of the Frog Fellowship (2023) I don't know how it made it to my YT recommendations but it's as if they had rescued the soundtrack of a series about frogs from the 70's.
And that's it, tell me if you saw any of these movies back in the day and if they touched your little heart in any way.
